This article was co-authored by our trained team of editors and researchers who validated it for accuracy and comprehensiveness.Siri is a personal assistant that communicates using speech synthesis. Speech synthesis—the artificial production of human speech—is widely used for various applications from assistive technology to gaming and entertainment.

Recently, combined with speech recognition, speech synthesis has become an integral part of virtual personal assistants, such as Siri. There are essentially two speech synthesis techniques used in the industry: unit selection [1] and parametric synthesis [2].

Unit selection synthesis provides the highest quality given a sufficient amount of high-quality speech recordings [3]and thus it is the most widely used speech synthesis technique in commercial products.

On the other hand, parametric synthesis provides highly intelligible and fluent speech, but suffers from lower overall quality. Therefore, parametric synthesis is often used when the corpus is small or a low footprint is required. Modern unit selection systems combine some of the benefits of the two approaches, and so are referred to as hybrid systems.

Hybrid unit selection methods are similar to classical unit selection techniques, but they use the parametric approach to predict which units should be selected. Recently, deep learning has gained momentum in the field of speech technology, largely surpassing conventional techniques, such as hidden Markov models HMMs.

Parametric synthesis has benefited greatly from deep learning technology. Deep learning has also enabled a completely new approach for speech synthesis called direct waveform modeling for example using WaveNet [4]which has the potential to provide both the high quality of unit selection synthesis and flexibility of parametric synthesis.

However, given its extremely high computational cost, it is not yet feasible for a production system. Building a high-quality text-to-speech TTS system for a personal assistant is not an easy task. The first phase is to find a professional voice talent whose voice is both pleasant and intelligible and fits the personality of Siri. In order to cover some of the vast variety of human speech, we first need to record 10—20 hours of speech in a professional studio.

The recording scripts vary from audio books to navigation instructions, and from prompted answers to witty jokes. Typically, this natural speech cannot be used as it is recorded because it is impossible to record all possible utterances the assistant may speak. Thus, unit selection TTS is based on slicing the recorded speech into its elementary components, such as half-phones, and then recombining them according to the input text to create entirely new speech.

In practice, selecting appropriate phone segments and joining them together is not easy, because the acoustic characteristics of each phone depend on its neighboring phones and the prosody of speech, which often makes the speech units incompatible with each other.

Figure 1 illustrates how speech can be synthesized using a speech database segmented into half-phones. The fundamental problem of unit selection TTS is to find a sequence of units e.

Traditionally, the process consists of two distinctive parts: front-end and back-end see Figure 2although in modern systems the boundary can sometimes be ambiguous. The purpose of the front-end is to provide phonetic transcription and prosodic information based on the raw text input.

This includes normalizing the raw text which may include numbers, abbreviations, etc. Note that the front-end is highly language dependent. Using the symbolic linguistic representation created by the text analysis module, the prosody generation module predicts values for acoustic features, such as intonation and duration.

These values are used to select appropriate units. The task of unit selection has high complexity, so modern synthesizers use machine learning methods that can learn the correspondence between text and speech and then predict the values of speech features from the feature values of unseen text. This model must be learned at the training stage of a synthesizer using a large amount of text and speech data.Greg Barbosa. Having the personal assistant read articles to me means I can focus on other activities while essentially turning my reading lists and emails into a personalized podcast.

Having Siri read your content can be quite a liberating feeling. It allows you to consume all the reading material you like, but with the added benefit of not having to have your face buried in a screen. Enabling this feature also means you can even navigate between apps, and Siri will continue to read the content you initiated! Enabling the first allows you to select a group of text and have Siri read that specific group back to you.

Selecting the second allows you have Siri read everything that is visible on your screen. Tip: While in this section, enable the Highlight Content option as well. Enabling it allows you to visually follow along with what is being read onscreen. I use the Speak Selection feature to have her pronounce unknown words to me, and the latter to have her read large amounts of text.

A small opaque window will appear and begin reading the content aloud. That window has a few controls to assist in the speech while the content is being read. Tapping the forward and backward options will jump through to the next major break in a group of text usually paragraphs or user interface elements.

Pressing Pause will pause the speech. If you were to hit the configured keys while just looking at any screen, you may find that Siri reads back what is seemingly random text. At least in this manner you know was it being read aloud.

You can change the voice that is heard when text is read to find a more fitting one for your taste. Apple have just released a new updated operating system to the iPad and iPhone, iOS 6. This alerted me to the existence of a function called Siri which allows you to control your iPad and iPhone using voice commands through the speech to text function.

The speech to text feature of Siri was originally introduced on iOS 5. When writing a hub for a few hours, I thought how great it would be if I could use Siri speech to text as a dictation device and speak rather than type my hubs.

Meet the real woman behind the voice of Siri

This hub is my first effort at doing just that so I will let you know how it goes at the end of this article. You can use Siri speech to text on pretty much any app that has a keyboard and is running iOS 5. You also need an internet connection to use voice dictation because of the high levels of data processing power required for natural language processing. Once enabled a small microphone button will appear next to the space bar, you simply press this button, a pink bar will appear on the microphone to show it is on, speak, press the button again to turn it off and your words will magically appear on the screen.

Well nearly anyway…. Using a separate microphone can really help if you find that Siri is not picking up your words correctly. It obviously struggles with some complicated words and some not so complicated words but generally I was very impressed. I found that when dictating through Siri speech to text, I would get most of the text right, but punctuation was difficult. There is a whole dictionary of commands for full stops, commas, brackets, paragraphs etc.

I found myself having to go over the text after it was written to correct some of the words and add punctuation. The result was that it probably took me longer to write this hub than it would if I had typed it up. That said the quality towards the end of the hub had significantly improved so I was obviously getting better. It really is a case of practice makes perfect.

The more you use Siri to dictate and the better you learn the punctuation, the quicker, easier and more accurate your results will be.

To make the most of Siri speech to text you also need an app to actually write in. You could use notes, notability or there are several free and paid apps like Dragon Dictation which are dedicated dictation packages. I tried several of these options and found that the quality of voice capture varied wildly, I found Dragon Dictation to be the worst and found that the best results came from using the messages app.

Another way you could use Siri speech to text on your iPhone or iPad is to dictate directly into the Hubpages app or any other iPhone or iPad blogging app. As long as Siri is enabled, the microphone icon will appear on your keyboard.

I have never tried to write an article, blog or hub on an iPhone but I would imagine that it would be a real pain using such a small keyboard and trying to negotiate through corrective text. Using speech to text would eliminate much of that pain and you could literally blog on the move.

Siri speech to text also allows you to dictate to other languages. Add the keyboard for the language you would like to speak, French for instance, and then speak away in French and Siri will pick it all up seamlessly.

Although I doubt it could do much with my awful French accent so I imagine native speakers would do much better. There are also numerous translation apps like Google Translate that can do this sort of thing, these could also be worth a go. In summary, if you are serious about dictating your articles and blogs then Siri speech to text could be the future. It probably took me a little longer than typing, but this was the first time i tried it and I'm sure there is great room for improvement.

I will definitely persevere as i think this could really revolutionize the way we write articles, blogs and Hubs. In summary comma if you are serious about dictating your articles and blogs then Siri could be the future period It probably took me a little longer than typing comma but this was the first time i tried it and I'm sure there is great room for improvement period I will definitely persevere as i think this could really revolutionize the way we write articles comma blogs and Hubs period new line new line I'm obviously improving as I managed this paragraph punctuation and all period period period new line new line Please leave a comment to let me know if you have any luck with Siri yourself period.
